C4535BF2-5CAC-4A79-AFC9-34184F3FCC7CI’m so busy these days and my mind is scattered between different things I want to do and things I have to do. I carefully manoever between the potentially dangerous thoughts. Meanwhile, it is a beautiful fall, with glourious sunrises and warm light.

Pinhole photos of this summer

I have finally found the time to scan these pinhole photos. I didn’t make so many of them this summer, but I am content with some of these images. There are times of change for me (my school moves to a new location) and my time seems so limited. But more than my limited time, my mental space seems crowded with all sorts of thoughts and worries. But I am hopeful, too, that change is a good thing this time.

September

My favorite part of the year begins. The days when I remember so clearly how it felt to be in third grade. Regretting the end of the long and carefree days, of sleeping in and having no plans, but also anxiously waiting for what the new school year has in store for me. Missing the feeling of being so safe at my desk, in my classroom, with all my friends, and looking forward to be there again. It’s just for a few days, at the beginning of September, when this mirror into the past opens for me and there I am, thirty years ago, waiting for the new school year to start.

Self-portrait

I hoped to finish ten new embroideries this summer, but it looks like I’ll have maybe three. I did embroider a lot, but I started a large self-portrait and I really enjoyed doing really small stitches and taking my time. The hoop is 35 cm in diameter. It’s my favorite embroidery I made thus far, I’ll probably frame it. I stitched it on cotton canvas that I have dyed with onion peels and turmeric (it’s from the same old bed sheet that I used for sewing a blouse.) I used the sewing machine with a thread in a very similar color to the canvas for larger surfaces (like the forehead), but I stitched most of it by hand. I like the “watercolor” effect this embroidery has, even more so in reality (the photo makes the lines just a bit harsher).

When I finished it, I was kind of sorry to lose such a pleasant way to spend my free time, but I have already started another, very detailed, embroidery.

First pinholes of this summer

Like every summer, I set up a small lab in a spare bathroom for pinhole processing. I really enjoy doing this and I’m looking forward to it as soon as the days get longer. This year, I’m using the Agfa paper from this photo.

DSCN8539

I finished the Ilford papers last year. Both these packs were a lucky flea market find several years ago, but even if they expired a long time ago, they are still very ok to use. The Agfa paper is maybe fresher because these exposures are only 4-5 hours long (while I exposed the Ilford paper for at least 9 hours, also managing to have 2 -3 days long exposures without over-exposing). We will try some portraits with this more reactive paper, as hopefully a few minutes of staying completely still will get results.

These are some images from our house this summer. Some outside images maybe and some portraits for sure will follow soon.

I think/not think/think about time a lot lately. It’s not the fact that I’ll have an important birthday this year, it’s not the time shrinking more and more, the days feeling like mere hours, the summer coming to an end soon. It’s neither of these. I actually love fall…
